The tailcoat story

The tailcoat comes from the military suit of the 18th century. First soldiers were tucking up the uniform to make the horse riding more comfortable fixing them at their back and the coloured back was making the uniform especially good-looking.

In the middle of 18th century the noble people wanting to support the military people started to wear the frock-coats with the cut front skirts. Gradually this kind of the coat started to distinguish from the other kinds of coats by the absence of the decorations. Thanks to it, this coat became spread in society.

Earlier than in other countries it became spread in England and in colonies of the Northern America. In France people were impressed by the black tailcoat in 1776. In Germany Johann Wolfgang von Goethe made the tailcoat famous thanks to him the blue tailcoat with the copper buttons entered the fashion world.

During the last tenths before the French revolution the blue and the dark brown tailcoat of the English cut became fashionable dress of the high classes of the society. With the democratization of the society it became available for all classes of the society and is the usual clothes for every day life till nowadays.

From 1830 the usual colour of the tailcoat was considered to be the black one. Only recently the designers of Paris have tried to introduce the fashion on the coloured tailcoats in the world.
